Teacher Pieter Pellens and the saxophone class of the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp welcome Italian saxophonist Massimiliano Girardi for an inspiring masterclass. Girardi is professor of saxophone at the F. Cilea Conservatoire in Reggio Calabria and a key figure in the European saxophone world.
About Girardi
Born in the autonomous province of Trento, he has built a multifaceted career as a performer, teacher and organiser. He is the driving force behind the Alpen Classica Festival and the Alpen Classica Saxfest, the first Euregio festivals for classical music and saxophone respectively, which take place in Trentino, South Tyrol and Tyrol.
As a performer, Girardi has built up an impressive international reputation. He has performed in venues such as the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Sala Verdi in Milan and the Belgrade Philharmonic, and has participated in festivals such as Milano Musica, Transart, Vienna Saxfest and the Chile Saxfest. He is active as a soloist and in ensembles such as the Milano Saxophone Quartet, the Sargas Duo (saxophone and organ/piano) and the Worksong Duo (saxophone and accordion).
Girardi has released a CD on the German label ARS and has been awarded the Fondazione Masi recording prize and the Bank Austria Art Prize, among others. As a passionate advocate for contemporary music, he has collaborated with composers such as Christian Lauba, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Maarten De Splenter.
In addition to his musical training, Girardi also studied modern languages and literature at the University of Trento, always with the highest honours.
