Studium Generale | Michel Lahaye

The theme for the Studium Generale for the academic year 25-26 is “anxious”.

On Wednesday, 3 December, we welcome:

  • Speaker | Michel Lahaye
  • Title | Fear in times of chaos: postmodern panic or primal instinct?
  • Language | Dutch
  • Location | Campus Spoor Noord - Noorderplaats, lecture hall NOO.00.027

Fear is timeless. And yet it seems as if it has become increasingly prominent in recent years. Lieven Scheire, Herman Brusselmans, Philippe Geubels, Petra De Sutter... each of them has spoken openly about their struggle with fear.
Have we all collectively gone too far? Isn't fear just a postmodern phenomenon, a consequence of an excessive performance-oriented society that – as Dirk De Wachter or Paul Verhaeghe argue – is primarily concerned with money and appearances? Or is it more nuanced than that?
Clinical psychologist Michel Lahaye specialises in anxiety disorders, is a lecturer in Applied Psychology at AP University College and author of Paniek Ontmaskerd (Panic Unmasked). In this lecture, he not only gives an insight into his practice, but also honestly shares his own experiences with panic and anxiety. Mildly, but with the necessary humour and lightness, he takes you on a hopeful quest for recovery from anxiety.
