Masterclasses Jazz with Billy Hart quartet

Not one, but four masterclasses will be given to our Jazz students on 15 October 2021. The four members of the Billy Hart Quartet will each take some of the students under their wings for an intensive coaching session on piano, drums, bass or saxophone.

The American Billy Hart is a master of contemporary musical expression. At a young age, he played with Otis Redding, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, among others. Because of his history with our country - he often gives workshops and master classes here - he is also called the godfather of Belgian jazz. This time around, he brought along his regular band members, who each in their turn have built up a solid musical reputation both in the US and abroad.

  • Billy Hart, now 80 years old, is not only a phenomenal drummer but also a passionate teacher. He travels the world giving lessons and master classes.
  • Mark Turner plays the tenor sax. He is known for his narrative improvisation, in which he likes to explore highs and lows and works magic with rhythm and harmony.
  • Ethan Iverson is the pianist for the Billy Hart Quartet, although he is also a gifted composer and writer. From 2000 to 2017, he played with the jazz piano trio The Bad Plus.
  • Ben Street is behind the bass. In the past, he has worked with John Scofield, Kurt Rosenwinkel and the legendary Sam Rivers, among others.

Thanks to the financial support by vzw Bolster, we manage to invite internationally renowned musicians to come work with our students every year. Who to invite, is largely based on the suggestions made by the students. We are very pleased that Billy Hart and his band members are not the only ones coming to our Conservatoire this year.  We are also very much looking forward to Avishai Cohen, Magic Malik and Miguel Zenon. And only a few weeks ago, Joe Lovano was here.

These master classes were also possible thanks to the help of deSingel. They are programming the Billy Hart Quartet on 16 October.
