New Stabat Mater in world première in the Conservatoire

Stabat mater dolorosa, that's how the famous medieval-Latin poem begins. It is the heartbreaking lament of Mary for the crucified Christ, and it already served as a source of inspiration for many composers including Rossini, Verdi and Vivaldi. The young Italian composer Paolo Galli delivers a quirky version, adding fragments from the poem Donna de Paradisio.

Artistic showcase

Galli is a doctoral researcher at the Conservatoire and has been researching the interaction between the sound characteristics of a text and the timbral characteristics of compositions for ensemble or orchestra for some time. He is one of the many artistic researchers who come into action during ARTICULATE research days, the yearly showcase of research at the Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (AP Hogeschool).

In the framework of Antwerp Baroque 2018, two Neapolitan masterpieces from that period are brought by students of the Conservatoire. Actor Lucas Vandervost brings the mythological sources of inspiration of Antwerp's baroque painters back to the forefront with 'Metamorphoses'. Harpsichord music is brought by specialists Korneel Bernolet and Liselotte Sels. Sels even had completely new pieces written for the instrument by Iranian composers

Baroque writer Joost van den Vondel is also being reinterpreted. Students of the drama department read 'Lucifer' and confront the dark and the light. You can read more about ARTICULATE at www.articulateresearchdays.be
