Print – the best-kept secret in the visual arts?

Arts practitioners who are interested in the various forms of printmaking have frequently observed that almost anything to do with their subject has attained little to no recognition in the contemporary art context (‘the wallflower at the art world ball’, as Susan Tallman has called it)  ─ whether at the level of major national or international exhibitions, art fairs and biennales or in the discourses on art in prominent journals and publications. The reasons are manifold, chief among them the current multi- or post-disciplinary character of most artistic practices. Nevertheless, along with other writers from within the field of printmaking (Jenn Law, Sarah Suzuki), I will argue that print can be said to be ‘everywhere’ in contemporary visual arts. My aim in considering a wide range of examples as evidence for this claim is NOT to establish a definitive list, a canon of contemporary print, but, as Canadian artist Barbara Balfour (2016) has said, ‘to acknowledge that part of what makes certain work interesting is connected to its printed nature’. Taking this notion as a cue, the lecture will further provide critical insights into the ontology and material and discursive possibilities of print in the visual arts.
