Prevention

An education in Music, Dance or Drama is no walk in the park. As a student, you will be challenged both mentally and physically to explore your limits and, together with your fellow students, to give your best time and time again. To support you during this process, the Conservatoire has set up a comprehensive student support system.

From a dedicated team of lecturers, solution-oriented coordinators and programme heads to a wide range of departmental and university-wide services, our tailor-made guidance offers you the ideal environment for your studies.

Physical support

For a long time, the Conservatoire has been focusing on the prevention and treatment of injuries. To this end, it draws on the expertise that teachers/researchers have built up together. Research into “prevention and treatment of strain injuries” has yielded a great deal of relevant information and led to the adaptation of our training programmes:

  • Physical Awareness is a compulsory component of the Drama and Music programmes.
  • Bachelor's students in Dance receive complementary training in prevention, nutritional advice and physical screening.
  • An in-house physiotherapist is available for guidance and treatment.

Mental resilience

In collaboration with the Applied Psychology programme, research was conducted into the mental resilience of performing artists. Based on the “Resilient Artists” research, a prevention programme was developed and implemented as a compulsory course in all Bachelor 1 years. Read more about the project here.

Centre of expertise

Thanks to the fruitful research collaboration with the rehabilitation sciences department at UA, Healthcare for Artists (HeArts) was established. Antwerp HeArts is the multidisciplinary centre of expertise for the prevention and treatment of complaints among artists at the University Hospital Antwerp (UZA) and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Antwerp.

So you are in good hands.
