During this year’s projectweek (from 10 to 14 February at the Royal Academy), the American artist Cameron Jamie (1969) will be our guest as a visiting research artist.
In order to express his uncanny cosmos, he uses diverse media such as photography, film, installation, drawing, sculpture and zines. His recent sculptures are currently on view at the Gladstone Gallery in Brussels.

On Monday 10 February, 6 pm Cameron Jamie will give an artist talk in Aula Pand.

Cameron Jamie was born in 1969 in Los Angeles. He currently lives and works in Paris. His artistic output encompasses drawing, sculpture and video, and focuses on underground aspects of the American suburbs. Jamie’s films look at popular rituals and subcultures, and realities born in the margins that form what he himself defines as ‘social theatre’. From brawls between kids, to food contests and rituals related to festivities, Jamie’s work reveals the role of small daily mythologies and folkloric rituals in suburban life. His video are often associated with ethnographic cinema; while making them, Jamie spends part of his time within the communities, integrating himself and forging collaborations. His films are often projected to the accompanimenet of live music by The Melvins or the Japanese guitarrist Keiji Haino.

Exhibitions dedicated to his work include those at Kunsthalle Zürich (2013), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2011), Cineteca National Mexico (2011) and MIT, Massachusetts (2007). His video BB (1998-2000) was included in the exhibition ‘Voice of Images’ (2012-13) at Palazzo Grassi and La Biennale de Venezia (2019).
