RELEASE CONCERT LEAP/DETACH. NEW ALBUM 'Singer Featherweight'

RELEASE CONCERT LEAP/DETACH
NEW ALBUM 'Singer Featherweight'
by Vitja Pauwels, Hendrik Lasure & Casper Van De Velde

birthday present for 40 years Radio Centraal from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp
in collaboration with Het Bos and Radio Centraal

To play on location is an activity that is currently more of a normality for football teams or toddlers than for musicians, but we are taking our chances with this concert by LEAP/DETACH (Vitja Pauwels, Hendrik Lasure & Casper Van De Velde) on Tuesday evening 27 October in Het Bos. The occasion is doubly festive: this concert is not only the album presentation of the most recent Track Report vinyl edition 'Singer Featherweight', it is also a birthday present for the jubilee of 40 years of Radio Centraal from behalf of the Academy. The album 'Singer Featherweight' is the result of the two-year research project 'Artificial Extensions of Acoustics' at the Conservatoire. The trio of guitar, piano and drums wanted to explore the richness of their personal instruments in terms of timbre, time and form, regardless of any means and in interaction with one another.

Leap in the dark
Their ensemble Leap/ Detach became the playground for this research project which they literally considered as a ‘leap in the dark’ with their custom-made, electronic instruments and preparations, and where newly made sounds arose ‘detached’ from their origins. They like to think of it as an act of painting together on a large canvas, sharing colours or stating opposite ideas. The music is a direct outcome of the tools that they created and learned to control in relation to each other throughout this collaboration. Acoustic and electronic elements blend together in symbiosis, sometimes in abstract contexts, sometimes in more lyrical ways. For some tracks they worked with specific guidelines or limitations while for other tracks they used a totally free approach.

Just like the record, the concert will be an ambiguous meeting of improvisation and métier, of transience and deepening that is bound to get under your skin.

Radio Centraal turned 40 and celebrates this anniversary appropriately by setting up camp with their friends in Het Bos, followed by another week of hijacking THE STUDIO, from where they will broadcast their notoriuous unruly sound for days on end. The concert of LEAP/DETACH is part of this extended birthday party and will be recorded and broadcast in due time on Radio Centraal.
