Confronting the angel – The contemporary musician, memory and imagination
presentation by Jonathan Impett
This presentation considers the state of the contemporary musician and their relationship with history. This is explored from the perspective of historically-informed performance as well as in the production of new music today. Technology and materiality play an important role in the formation of conceptual contexts. The issue becomes one of the production of knowledge, and hence central to the question of artistic research. Memory, imagination and creation are fully entwined, on both personal and cultural planes. Marlies De Munck will moderate the discussion.
In the context of research group UP's project Early Music: A contemporary perspective on repertoire and interpretation, four "thinkUP" sessions take place in the academic year 2025-2026, each featuring an influential musical thinker. With this series, UP aims at exploring innovative perspectives on the musical (hyper)archive, musical works, and early music, and how they apply to the ongoing artistic research within the research group.
