Echoes of Heritage is a co-creative initiative situated at the nexus of intercultural creativity, technological mediation, and music composition. The project aims to co-create a digital space (i.e., the contact zone) that meaningfully engages the epistemologies and practices of traditional music. Through three network music works and performances, the project seeks to initiate artistic dialogues about declining music heritage, and raise awareness of instruments, sound recordings, performance practices and cultures. The compositions will explore various improvisational and representational formats, such as, gestural score (Soundpainting (Weaver 2018, 2025)), text score (Deep Listening (Oliveros 2005)), and graphical score (Rosenboom 2022), to be co-created by musicians and students from Uganda, South Africa, Indonesia, Belgium and the United States.
Aimed at fostering a live, immediate and sustainable exchange between musicians in the Global South and Global North—otherwise supported by pre-recording and post-production—the project promotes cultural inclusivity, diversity and representation of traditional music in the digital artistic sphere, pedagogy and research. On one hand, the project expands the repertoire and creative possibilities of intercultural telematic collaboration; on the other, it offers new insights into the sociocultural affordances of communication technology through practice-based music research.
