This research explores the creative and interactive possibilities of working with the no-input mixer – an unconventional variation of the simple audio mixer that allows the medium to produce sound solely through self-resonating feedback loops – in the context of experimental music and performative art.
Particularly, this study focuses on using the no-input mixer as both creative source and outcome governed by nonlinearity. Exploring nonlinearity and approaching the “lack of control” as a democratic medium, defies hierarchical structures and offers a more inclusive space for involvement and exploration. In the case of a nonlinear medium such as the no-input mixer, it reframes the creative process/performance as a continuous open dialogue between the artist, the medium and the audience.
Rooted in experimental music practices this research will address the unpredictable and nonlinear nature of the no-input mixer under three different yet mutually interrelated perspectives:
- as an Instrument to actively compose and perform with unpredictability, errors, non-virtuosity and emerging behaviors,
- as a Device to design new hybrid instruments and performative ecosystems, exploring agency and liveness in experimental art with technology,
- as a Tool to create accessible and sustainable spaces for “not-knowing”, for the possibility of shifting perception, and opening for an unexpected experience and curious thoughts.
