ABSTRACT
Terms like form, material, and texture, though commonly used in musicians’ discourse, do not refer to concrete perceptual phenomena but instead describe music in schematic and general terms. The primary objective of my research is to develop conceptual and empirical tools to define form and material in the auditory domain. My approach to achieving this goal involves drawing analogies between visual and auditory perception.
The evening will open with a performance by an excellent jazz quintet I had the honor to work with. They will perform a series of my pieces, where musical texture, a key notion in my research, serves as the inspiration for the compositions and improvisations.
The musicians are Floris Kappeyne (piano), Siebren Smink (electric guitar and sound effects), Matthias van den Brande (alto saxophone), Omer Govreen (double bass), and Nick Thessalonikefs (drums and percussion).
