Silent Movie - Lotte Reiniger: The Fairy Tale Films

German pioneer Lotte Reiniger is inextricably linked to her innovative silhouette films, in which paper and cardboard cut-out figures, weighted with lead and hinged at the joints, were hand-manipulated from frame to frame and filmed via stop-motion photography. Cleaner's characters are framed by detailed backgrounds in several layers of translucent paper or colourful acetate films for colour films. Her exceptional talent, precision work and skill still impress to this day, as does her extensive filmography that counts as many as more than 60 films. In this compilation, we show Reiner's interpretations of classic myths and fairy tales, a magical collection of tales by the Brothers Grimm, Wilhelm Hauff, Hans Christian Andersen and the collection of folk tales One Thousand and One Nights.

Music students at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp are taking on the challenge of providing Lotte Reiniger's fascinating silent films with a new, quirky soundtrack.
