Studium Generale | Anneleen Van Offel

Studium Generale's annual theme for the academic year of 24-25 is 'hidden networks'

On Thursday the 27th of March 2025 we welcome

  • Speaker: Anneleen Van Offel
  • Title lecture: The Voice of Sulina

We are hidden by a web that knows more than we do. Other living beings have also given us consciousness, and they give the world meaning in their own way. Think, for example, of the ancient knowledge in various indigenous cultures around the world that consciousness lies hidden in mountains and rivers, and that only the West seems to have lost this.

In her second novel, The Voice of Sulina , author Anneleen Van Offel takes up these surprising and restless encouragements to travel along a river, because rivers are ancient signposts in the landscape. Halfway through the book, the main character becomes a mother. It brings her to flexible fluidity; the dissolving of boundaries of one body, we are one big body, mother and child, mother, child and planet. It brings her to hydrofeminism and ecofeminism. Everything forms, as it were, one big web. Man is just a knot of it.
