E-XXI (Ensemble 21), the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp's ensemble for contemporary music, offers students a platform to experiment with contemporary compositions and interdisciplinary collaborations. The ensemble focuses on projects that integrate disciplines such as dance, media, writing and performance art. The flexible configuration per project makes it a dynamic collective, challenging students to push boundaries and explore new creative possibilities.
Projects and cooperations
E-XXI participates in cutting-edge projects in and outside Belgium. Recently, the ensemble performed at November Music, an international festival for contemporary music in the Netherlands. Several multidisciplinary projects recently emerged within the Conservatoire, such as a collaboration with drama and music students around Laughter Studies 7 by Louis D'Heudières. In another project, the ensemble performed Dissolve by Joanna Bailie, a composition that combines music with cinematic images and environmental sounds. These projects illustrate E-XXI's innovative and cross-border approach.
International appeal
Its focus on contemporary music makes the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp a popular destination for international students. E-XXI gives them the opportunity to work in depth on modern compositions and interdisciplinary research. This makes the Conservatoire a unique place for young musicians who want to specialise in contemporary music practice.
Directed by Pieter Matthynssens
The ensemble is under the artistic direction of Pieter Matthynssens, an experienced cellist, art scholar and artistic director of the NADAR Ensemble. Mathijssens brings experience in contemporary music and interdisciplinary work. His accompaniment inspires students to look beyond the traditional frameworks of music and develop their artistic vision.
E-XXI as artistic laboratory
E-XXI is an artistic laboratory where students experiment, collaborate and grow. By participating in innovative projects and experimenting as a group, they contribute to the Conservatoire's goal of promoting the knowledge and appreciation of contemporary music.
