Between Action and Intuition: Conceptual Art through the Philosophy of Kitaro Nishida

In this lecture, Okumura will sketch out an alternative perspective on conceptual art practiced in the late '60s and early '70s, basing his discussion on the term's initial definition proposed by American artist Sol LeWitt and further articulating it through the lens of philosophical ideas elaborated by Japanese thinker Kitaro Nishida, with particular attention to their shared focus on the body as an intuitive instrument to stimulate the world with selfless actions.

. . . there was a search for a more objective method of organization as a reaction against the idea that art was composed with great sensitivity by the artist. . . . This reaction eventually led to a theory of art that offered the idea that the original conception (perhaps intuition) of the work of art was of primary importance.—Sol LeWitt, 1978 (on his essay 'Paragraphs on Conceptual Art', 1967

. . . actional intuition must be the most radical and concrete way for us to consciously comprehend the real. / Instinct can be seen as its undeveloped state. Art can be considered as the ultimate in one of its directions.—Kitaro Nishida, 1939 (in his essay 'Absolute Contradictory Self-Identity').

Yuki Okumura is an artist, researcher, and translator originally from Japan and currently working mainly in the Central European Time zone.
