Ronny Blust

Ronny Blust is a biologist by training and a full professor at the University of Antwerp. His research focuses on how organisms adapt to their environment and how natural and anthropogenic influences shape these processes, determining the difference between success and failure. A key application of his work is the scientific foundation of ecologically sound standard setting.

In this context, he has authored or co-authored over 500 papers in international journals and books and has organized and presented at numerous conferences and workshops. His teaching primarily explores the relationship between form and function in biology and the impact of environmental stressors on organisms, communities, and ecosystems.

Beyond research and teaching, Ronny Blust has played a leading role in the governance of the University of Antwerp, serving as Chairman of the Board of Governors (2012–2016) and Vice-Chancellor for Research (2016–2024). These roles have brought him into contact with a broad range of disciplines, including research in the arts. He actively fosters collaboration between artists and scientists, promoting interdisciplinary synergies that combine creativity and scientific insight.

Together with Roel Arkesteijn, he is a driving force behind the Eco Lab, established in 2024 by the Art & Ecology research group at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. As a guest researcher within the group, he leverages his knowledge and network to bridge the academy and the university. The Eco Lab serves as an experimental space to further explore and expand the intersection of art and science.
