Since 1979, Spank Moons had various solo and group exhibitions, including with Cindy Sherman, Gérald Van Der Kaap in 1982 and with Anselm Kiefer, Andy Warhol, Jan Henderikse and Hans Op de Beeck in 2013.
Polaroid! An homage with Marina Abramovic, Araki, Marlene Dumas and Tracey Emin in 2014.
Spank Moons studied at the Antwerp Academy between 1971 and 1982: starting at the Kunsthumaniora, then at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and he is a laureate of the HISK (Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten).
In 2006, on the occasion of his 50th birthday, the book Spankenstein was published.
In 2012, he obtained the title of Doctor in the Arts at the UAntwerp with the project In Questa Tomba Oscura - The Skull Within- pixelation as strategy of
(dis)appearance.
In Spankenstein, Spank Moons sticks the image into reality, his photos seem to depict 'life-as-it-is', with a small indentation in it, like a friendly pinch in the cheek.
In In Questa Tomba Oscura, this relationship is turned on its axis: reality now seems to be fitted into the image. Spank Moons wants to capture the tragedy of death by pursuing it in his iconographic tradition.
Since 1985 he has been working at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. First as an assistant to Paul Ausloos, Jan Gruyaert and Johan Swinnen.
He taught artistic photography between 1989 and 2012 and from then until 2021 he was a lecturer in visual arts and curator/ supervisor of the Master projects.
