Music Practice

The Music Practice course is one of the central pillars of the curriculum for all students of an instrument or vocal studies, and runs continuously from Bachelor 1 to Master 2. It is a broad programme in ensemble playing and singing. During the five levels of the programme, each student follows an intensive course of study in both the basic repertoire and the specific performance practice necessary to function later as a professional musician in an orchestra, ensemble or choir.

An important part of this subject is playing in permanent ensembles. These are organised on the one hand by instrument group – such as the percussion ensemble, (chamber) choir, woodwind ensemble, harp ensemble, brass ensemble, marimba ensemble, piano and keyboard instruments, accordion ensemble, saxophone ensemble and the string ensembles – and on the other hand in larger, umbrella formations such as E-XXI, the symphony orchestra, harmony orchestra or baroque ensemble. Through weekly or combined lessons, students develop the skills and experience necessary to function as a full member of a larger musical ensemble.

The ensembles and orchestras are led by internal teachers who pass on their professional knowledge and practical experience as performing musicians in a direct and practical manner. In addition, the learning process is enriched by guest lectures from renowned external musicians. In recent years, students have worked with Ed Spanjaard, Alexander Gordon, Diana Ketler, Lars Mlekusch and Benoît De Leersnyder, among others.

In addition, various projects take place each year, some in collaboration with external partners such as the International Opera Academy, Orchestra Academy and ISOLISTI. These projects are set up and carried out at short notice, in line with professional orchestral practice, enabling students to learn to function within an intensive, results-oriented working environment.

Furthermore, Music Practice offers students the opportunity to broaden their artistic horizons through a wide range of masterclasses, lecture recitals, study trips and project-based initiatives. These activities are related to the students' own discipline, but can also be interdisciplinary or focused on chamber music. Masterclasses are an integral part of Music Practice.
