This research project studies the history and role of chamber music within the Antwerp bourgeois culture from 1848 until 1914. This formerly popular, but now largely ignored repertoire reveals a lot about the material, organizational, sociological and economical aspects of the music company during that period. This music-historical and artistic research is conducted through the life and work of two composers from Antwerp: Louis Gobbaerts and Maria Matthijssens.
