JAZZ HANDS

This research journey traverses the realms of music, technology, and innovation, culminating in the creation of a groundbreaking hybrid saxophone.

The project unfolds in a multi-dimensional narrative, intertwining technical expertise, artistic exploration, and a quest for the future of musical expression.

The journey commences with the student's transformation from a musician into an aspiring engineer, fueled by a vision of a novel instrument.

The core idea centers on the fusion of traditional saxophone craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, epitomized by the incorporation of sensors mapping mechanical movements to the digital domain, augmenting the traditional saxophone to a full fledged MIDI controller, without compromising the saxophone’s initial acoustic properties.

The research documents the progression through each phase, from self-guided education in the digital landscape to the development of a working proof-of-concept model.
The hybrid saxophone's prototype will be unveiled during a concert, featuring the Goeyvaerts String Trio at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

This doctoral research represents a pioneering exploration at the intersection of art and technology. It celebrates the journey from novice to innovator, weaving together knowledge acquisition, prototyping, and artistic expression.
The hybrid saxophone, with its synthesis of tradition and innovation, serves as a testament to the student's dedication and vision, while also hinting at a future where music and technology could harmonize more seamlessly.
