L’étranger

Albert Camus’ oeuvre of is very relevant today. Dramatic texts such as Les Justes or novels such as L'étranger and L'hôte deal with themes as terrorism, morality and alienation. This project wants to investigate the influence of Camus on contemporary theater practice.

L'étranger is the research object. It is Camus' most famous work, yet it is not often performed. This research investigates the influence of L'étranger on a (school-going) audience and investigates how the novel can be theorized. The first phase consists of a literature study on Camus and on the history of L'étranger. The second phase consists of conversations about the book with students from secondary schools, students from the Louvain-La-Neuve conservatory, theater makers with a migrant background and refugees in collaboration with Atlas, integratie en inburgering in Antwerp. Third phase consists of rehearsals which will lead to a performance (in Dutch and French) and a written report.
