Kristof Timmerman’s PhD research, Sense of Wonder: Artistic Portals Between the Real and the Virtual, explores how portals function as immersive thresholds between physical and digital realities. He investigates how transitions between these realms can be designed to deepen engagement in virtual worlds, drawing on artistic and philosophical perspectives. His work examines how artistic and interactive strategies can blur the boundaries between reality and virtuality, questioning the dualistic separation of both. Through practice-based research, he develops virtual and mixed-reality experiences that experiment with presence, embodiment, and perception. Ultimately, his research seeks to create transformative experiences that reframe our relationship with the digital through artistic portals.
