Studio Stadswaag #5: Feeling Things Together – A Synthetic Adventure

Book launch / artist talk / dialogue by Expanding Academy, with David Price, Wouter Van der Hallen and others

Wednesday 26 April, 19:30

Since their initial meeting in 2010, the paths of Wouter Van der Hallen (°Borgerhout, 1984) and David Price (°Glasgow, 1982) have crossed numerous times. This has led to a number of formal and informal collaborations, which they somewhat affectionately describe as ‘anecdote-system projects’, both inside and outside the context of the arts. During this artist talk they will review some of these collaborations, including their visual contribution to Feeling Things Together - A Synthetic Adventure, published by Expanding Academy at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.

As Price is only just emerging from an “exaggeratedly expanded winter”, he will not be physically present. However, he will actively contribute to this talk in a number of ways.

Feeling Things Together is a synthesis of the experiences of Maarten Desmet’s office Endeavour, his research into Bhutan’s ‘Gross National Happiness’, the process-relational thought of Alfred North Whitehead, and the work of the 15th century Tibetan architect, philosopher and iron-chain bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo. It features contributions by Upasana Dahal, Maarten Desmet, Ronny Desmet, Nico Dockx, Gilly Karjevsky, David Price, Alejandra Sarria, Pelin Tan, Wouter Van der Hallen, Judith Wielander, and Louwrien Wijers, and is published within the Expanding Academy Publication Series edited by Nico Dockx and Judith Wielander.

According to its initiators, the goal of the Expanding Academy programme is “to imagine and re-imagine novel relationships between things and people that were previously unrelated, and thereby produce new realities”. But when imagining, designing and realizing new realities, how do we make sure to establish harmonious relations between our given contexts, cultures, perspectives, planetary boundaries, and so on?

The publication Feeling Things Together will be presented in the context of Studio Stadswaag, to fuel the ongoing participatory process for the art integration on the Stadswaag Square.

Studio Stadswaag is a collaboration between the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and Stadsform.
It is a co-creative process in which artists and (former) students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, together and in dialogue with the neighborhood of the Stadswaag (a square located on the North of the Academy Campus) and its residents, examine what the stratification of the Stadswaag consists of today, what is in the balance, and how we can create harmonious connections and new realities through art in the public space.
