This year marks the 360th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, kicking off a 360° programme in which one of the world's first art schools reflects on its role in contemporary society. During the Antwerp Art Weekend, the Academy reaches out to the wider art community beyond its walls, exposing the combined forces of students, teachers, and researchers in various presentations.
― MYTHICAL TRUTHS – YORGOS MARAZIOTIS
expo & walk
→ throughout the Academy (the Garden, the Orangerie, the Wintertuin, various halls)
For his multidisciplinary intervention 'Mythical Truths', artist-researcher Yorgos Maraziotis turned oral narrations into language-based sculptures, printed matter, and sound projections, which he presents throughout the Academy, creating a polyphonic landscape where personal truths blur with collective myths and shape the identity of the institution. More info.
― THE SYMPOIESIS GARDEN
→ Academy Garden
In September, artist Eline De Clercq started at the Academy a community garden for and by students and artists. ‘The Sympoiesis Garden’ (sympoiesis means 'making together') is a three-year research project on art and ecology, functioning as a non-formal learning environment about climate change, gender norms, decolonisation and intersectionalism. The garden group (welcome!) meets weekly on Wednesday and Thursday to garden together, restore ecology, and discuss resilience in the visual arts. More info
― 360° ACADEMY OPEN AIR
expo
→ Academy Garden
As part of 360° Academy, the third edition of the ‘Academy Open Air’ exhibition is dedicated to the founder of the Academy, the painter David Teniers II. The empty pedestal in the historic Academy Garden once bore his bronze statue, which is now located at Teniersplaats. From May to September, three artistic interventions by students will revive the empty pedestal in the Academy Garden. During the Antwerp Art Weekend, Jana Coolen will present her ‘Egg Monument’ on the pedestal.
― GRAPHIC DESIGN OF SCHELD'APEN
expo & book launch
→ Tempel
The cultural hub Scheld'apen was home to an eclectic stream of artists, with over 1300 events occurring from 1998 till 2013. All those events produced a flux of visual communication and printed media. Artist Benny Van den Meulengracht-Vrancx and musician Bent Vande Sompele poured a selection of those graphical works into a book. 'Graphic Design of Scheld’apen’ is the result of a two-year research project at the Academy, in collaboration with Het Bos, Frans Masereel Centrum and Stockmans Art Books. More info.
― STUDENT COUNCIL
expo & happenings
→ Wintertuin
The Student Council takes over the Wintertuin with an exhibition based on shared curatorship: every participating student proposes an artwork of a fellow student. The accompanying programme is organized by two student driven initiatives. ‘Hapjes’ will screen a selection of digital works by students on the back wall. And ‘Every Two weeks’ organizes the happenings and performances, turning the Wintertuin into a space for encounter and exchange. Check the programme on IG @students_royalacademyantwerp
― 10 EDITIONS, ART ON CAMPUS, IN SITU
book launch
→ Entrance hall
For the 10th time, master students of In Situ show the result of their dialogue with the green environment of Campus Drie Eiken, Wilrijk. The publication 'Ten editions, Art on Campus, In Situ' will be presented at the Academy during the Antwerp Art Weekend. More info.
― LON LANDAU
expo
→ Lange Zaal
The Lange Zaal hosts an exhibition in collaboration with The Letterenhuis, confronting the drawings of the avant-garde set and costume designer Lon Landau (1910-1945) with new designs by the Academy’s costume design students. The students drew inspiration from, among other things, Landau's design drawings for ‘Van den Vos Reynaerde’, one of his most famous theatre projects. Original sketches, photographs and brochures bring to life Landau's way of working and theatre life in the 1930s. More info.
