It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Laure Severac, teacher at the fashion department and researcher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. Laure died on 19 August following a traffic accident while on her cycling holiday in Wales.
Laure Severac was an Antwerp-based artist whose practice comprised the fields of architecture, fashion, textiles, and crafts. She studied architecture in France and Germany and graduated in 2015 in fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. She was shortlisted for the H&M Design Awards, was the recipient of the Christine Mathys Award, the EE-Exclusive Prize, the BVBA32 Prize, and the Flanders Fashion Institute Award, and she showcased her work at the Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in Brussels.
In her artistic practice, Laure looked for collaborative projects relating to the topic of generosity:
“Recently I recognise in my practice how the presence of objects deals with gestures of giving; they are objects that seek the other. These gestures lead me to question the notion of the gift in my artistic work. Which is located in my way of doing things, of placing and folding love in it, with methods, awareness, and care.”
Laure was especially beloved and valued by her colleagues as well by her students. We will greatly miss her energy and expertise, and we will build upon her legacy.
Our thoughts are with Laure’s family and friends.
We meet on Wednesday 23rd of August at 18h at De Oude Landen in Antwerp-North (location).
Together we will have a silent walk to remember Laure. Afterwards we gather to share moments, memories and love.
We will enter a nature reserve, so leave your bicycles under the bridge and think of appropriate shoes.
Everyone who feels the call is welcome.
