'Keyboard works Part 1', by Jeroen Malaise, with guest Karel Stulens

Last centuries, the piano became the ultimate keyboard instrument. Its sophisticated mechanism and unique sound offer countless artistic possibilities. From the end of the 18th century, the first pianists mastered many possible ways to play and explore this instrument, running up and down the keys with elegant and complicated exercises, finding new harmonies and new textures, and bringing it all to an acrobatic level. Apart from playing common repertoire, these pianists improvised, created and performed their own pieces. This tradition has been mostly disappeared in the 20th century.

This CD recording is part of an academic research at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, with the aim of reviving the tradition of combining creation and performance but with contemporary aesthetics.
