The human need for ornament is universal and timeless. Jewellery and wearable objects tell a story about the status, style and culture of the beholder.
At the same time they are the perfect witness to social, cultural and technological developments. Being a jewellery designer is having an exciting and versatile profession, based on a rich tradition of craftsmanship, in touch with contemporary developments.
Jewellery Design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp offers a healthy balance between artistic studio practice, specific and general theory subjects and drawing. A team of experienced and professional artists and designers provides the necessary guidance and supports the student in the development of his/her personal artistic practice.
Considerable attention and time is devoted to the technical skills and practical insights needed for the métier. Technological knowledge, knowledge of metals, gemstones and other materials, jewellery history and 3D computer drawing are essential components of the multifaceted programme. Curiosity and imagination are encouraged, as are research skills, concept development and self-reflection.
Study visits, workshops, projects, lectures and supervision by (international) guest lecturers play an important role in this. Research methodology, art history and art theory provide the necessary theoretical context.
With a Master’s degree in Jewellery Design you can start working as an independent designer or look for collaborations in the world of jewellery design or goldsmithing.
