Modes of attention – a conversation with François Génot

Anchored in the practice of drawing while exploring artistic forms as varied as sculpture, installation, photography, ceramics and writing, the work of François Génot is nourished by the attention he pays to the living world, to the rhythm of the seasons, to the cycles of plants. He claims a form of collaboration with nature, conceiving his practice as an ecosystem in which all the components –materials, motifs, forms, gestures, processes, and the context of production – are intertwined and influence each other. The experience of place, which is based on a practice of observation but also on activities such as walking and picking, is also at the heart of his work.

This conversation with François Génot will focus on the intimate relationship that connects his practice and his working environment, his collaborative approach with living forms, and the importance observation and the experience of place in his work.

François Génot (1981, Strasbourg) lives and works in the Grand Est region, France. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Saarländisches Künstlerhaus, Saarbrücken (2020), CIAP – Centre International d'Art et du Paysage, Ile de Vassivière (2018), CEAAC, Strasbourg (2015), Halle Verrière, Meisenthal (2008).

François Génot will be in conversation with the Forms of Life research group.

Forms of Life is developed by Tina Gillen, Artist, Teacher and Researcher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Christophe Gallois, Curator, Head of Exhibitions at Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, and a group of students of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, in collaboration with Mudam Luxemboug.
