Studium Generale | Jeffrey Tyssens

Studium Generale's annual theme for the academic year of 24-25 is 'hidden networks'

On Wednesday, the 5th of February, we welcome:

  • Speaker: Jeffrey Tyssens
  • Lecture: Freemasonry, an introduction

In this talk, historian Jeffrey Tyssens attempts to define the discrete society of Freemasonry. Where does it come from, and how does Freemasonry present itself specifically in the Belgian and Flemish contexts? Freemasonry, which has developed in all democratic countries, is not a uniform entity. Significant differences exist in its social role across various contexts. Since it emerged in the Low Countries during the Ancien Régime, how has this society evolved to the present day? What nuances can be discerned within Belgian Freemasonry? Can it, with its originally 18th-century way of working, still hold significance in a rapidly changing, digital world?
