Exquisite corpses in digital landscapes
Research class by Kristí Fekete

‘Exquisite corpse’ is a game during which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. It works similarly as Mad Libs — players write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the writing, and then pass it to the next player for a further contribution. The name ‘exquisite corpse’ derived from a phrase that resulted when Surrealists first played the game.

This research class will animate an exquisite corpse with digital technologies. Instead of a sheet of paper, we will use the ceiling of the Venushal, with its grid as the paper folds. Each ‘fold’ will be worked on by the group in turns. This collective process will be systematically documented, creating a moving image. The final product will be projected in the Venushal as a part of Maxlab’s 'The Grid'.
Through this process, we’ll thematise authorship of a group instead of an individual. The focus will be on experimenting collectively, working with a shared tool box, on a mutual outcome. This practical approach will be accompanied by a critical, theoretical framework.
