Brooklyn, New York born and Basel, Switzerland based. Jeremy is a dancer/ performer, choreographer/ director, who is very involved in the composing of sound and conceptualisation of set design for his works.
He has had engagements at the Semperoper in Dresden (2010-2012) and Ballett Basel (2012-2016). As a guest performer I am associated with Schauspielhaus Zürich, where I have worked with Trajal Harrell. Most recently I’ve realized and presented my productions in theaters and festivals across Europe (Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, The Netherlands) and Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Rwanda.)
A central operation to my practice has been dissecting, demystifying and re-contextualizing content in order to confront definitions of validity and contemporaneity. I apply this thinking not only to the discourses that I engage with (most rigorously race, masculine performativity and how they are entertangled) but also the means by which I explore these discourses (the dance or “movement” vocabulary used, the symbolism embedded in the stage and set materials, and methods of sonic composition and curation of soundscore). In the conceptualisation of my stages the combination of textiles and natural elements (earth, rock etc.) and the productive friction that their proximity catalyzes has been integral in my work.
