Lies Colman was born in Antwerp as the youngest in a family of five. She started with mandolin lessons at age five, followed by piano at age eight, violin at age ten, and percussion at age fourteen. From the age of nine she gave piano recitals and concerts at home and abroad, and was a laureate in various competitions.
After graduating summa cum laude from the Antwerp State Music Academy, she began her higher studies at the age of 14 as a free student at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp with Jacques Detiège and Eduardo Torbianelli. At 17, she temporarily left the conservatoire for the universities of Antwerp and Ghent, where she obtained a Bachelor degree at Law and a Master degree of Comparative Cultural Science. In 2001 she returned to the Antwerp Conservatoire, studied piano with Eliane Rodrigues and Robert Groslot and violin with Dejan Mijajev, and obtained her second Master's degree here, this time in Classical Music.
Lies Colman performed internationally in, among others, Germany, France, Norway, Spain, Portugal, Croatia, the Netherlands, Morocco, Switzerland, Austria, South Africa, Brunei, Indonesia and the Philippines. She has participated in various (inter)national radio and TV broadcasts, moved on to opera and music theatre, and recorded several CDs.
In 2013 she became Guest Professor of Piano at her alma mater, the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. Since 2015, she has been one of the Artistic Directors at the same institution, more specifically for the Music Classical and Educational Master of Music programmes.
Lies Colman obtained a degree in Strategic Management and Leadership at the London School of International Business in 2020, and graduated in 2021 as Master in Business Administration at the University of Chichester. Subsequently she embarked on doctoral research in the Arts at the Antwerp University and the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp. Her artistic and research focuses lie on creative and interdisciplinary collaborations, contemporary creations and innovative artistic practices, but she keeps a special place in her heart and on stage for the romantic and classical repertoire.
