A Database of Schemata As a Starting Point For Historically Informed Improvisation and Composition

Although much research has been done in the last fifteen years on eighteenth-century improvisation and composition methods, the accessibility, comprehensibility and concrete applicability of the output turns out to be problematic. The research results are mostly published in specialized journals that are not available in the conservatoire library, are too expensive to purchase, often use complex jargon and are not oriented on pedagogical usefulness. While Demeyere had written several syllabi to provide students with guidance in this matter, they lack an interactive and auditory component. Moreover, new and modified insights have been gained since these syllabi were created.

This project, which is at the same time devoted to maximizing the pedagogical quality of the courses practical harmony, counterpoint and analysis as to the worldwide dissemination of this knowledge, aims to tackle these problems thoroughly and dynamically. The primary output of this project is the realization of a database with all schemata known to date —the essential eighteenth-century musical building blocks. This database, in the form of a rich website, will also include applications, music examples, videos and explanations, the latter based on comprehensively reformulating, synthesizing and correcting of the existing professional literature. In addition, the processing of new schemata is an important part of this research as well.
