The aim of this project is to connect philosophical research with the appreciation of photographs and photographic works that bring philosophical problems to the surface. This research focuses on the way in which pictorial organization (or composition) of photographs contributes to the general reading of the subject of the photograph (or what it portrays).
The photos of Bert Danckaert are deviant and provocative in their formal appearance precisely because they are 'flat' photographs - their visual organization is based on principles that differ profoundly from those of the casual family snapshot. Bence Nanay did a lot of research into two-dimensional versus three-dimensional pictorial organization, which is directly applicable to Bert Danckaert's photographs.
