The starting point of this research is the concept of the 'point' and the way in which it is used in pointillism, a movement in painting in the late 19th century. How does the point function as a building block of reality and its artistic representation? The point is integrated in this research as a visual component in a three-dimensional way of working, which is inspired by the tableau vivant, a different artistic form that is typical of the European fin de siècle.
Through the transformation from dot (2D) to sphere (3D) in the tableau-vivant, an approach that fits in contemporary art with costume design and installation art, the point is re-conceptualized as a visual element. This research emphasizes the theatricality of painting and explores the possibilities of further developing this art form in installations and performances.
