Karin Hanssen (1960) is a visual artist, writer, researcher in the arts and activist. She studied drawing and painting at AP University College Antwerp (KAA) and at the Higher Institute (HISK) where she graduated in 1993. In 2016 she obtained her PhD at the University of Antwerp with De Geleende Blik - in dialoog met de tijd over de terugblik binnen appropriatie van fotografische beelden in de schilderkunst.
Since 2012, her texts on art and artists have been published in, among others, H ART, A Prior, Alphavillle, Rekto:Verso and Forum+. In 2013 she made the documentary film In dialogue with Luc Tuymans about the gaze and looking back in time in the work of Luc Tuymans. Recently she wrote an essay on the appropriation of photographic images and the appropriation of the image of women in painting De Geleende Blik - in dialogue with times. As an activist she started Contemporary Women Artists in Belgium in 2011, an online database and up-to-date agenda to promote and visualize professional female visual artists working in Belgium.
Karin Hanssen exhibited at SMAK Ghent, MAS Museum Antwerp, the 7th Sharjah Biennial, the 2nd YokohamaTriennial, TAFA gallery Tianjin China, Chelsea Art Museum New York, Kunstverein Ahlen Germany, New Art Gallery Walsall and Canberra Contemporary Art Space Australia.
