Steven Humblet

Dr. Steven Humblet studied philosophy and anthropology at the KULeuven. In 2014 he defended his PhD in the art sciences at the UGent on the photobook Changing New York (1939) by the American photographer Berenice Abbott. He taught several courses on the history and theory of photography at Sint-Lucas Brussel & Gent, KASK Gent and KASK Antwerpen. Since 1999 he has been active as an art critic, first for the daily newspaper the Financieel-Economische Tijd, later for specialized art magazines as De Witte Raaf, Etcetera, Camera Austria, Obscuur, Trigger, and others. He is a regular contributor to books by visual artists and photographers.

Between 2005 and 2013 Humblet was involved in the research project Citygraphy which dealt with the visual imagination of city and landscape and was led by the researcher Dirk Lauwaert. He was the editor of several books on photography, such as Cahier #1: The Photographic Image in Print (2009), Citygraphy 1(2009) & Citygraphy 2 (2011) and more recently The Photographic: Other Pictures (2017) and Off Camera(2021). In 2017 he was co-curator of the exhibition The Photographic: Other Pictures at SMAK, Gent and in 2019 he co-curated an exhibition on the magazine Variétés at the Vandenhove Centre in Gent. In 2021 he curated The Unruly Apparatus, the result of a one-year research project at the Royal Academy of Fine arts, Antwerp.
