Submerging the text

The main aim of this research project is to investigate the interactions between the phonetic characteristics of a text and the timbral and formal characteristics of an instrumental composition. Text can be conceived as a virtual catalyst of acoustic and formal functions. The instrumental composition can be seen as a tool for text analysis.

Paolli Galli will integrate his compositional process and the study of phonetic criteria with an analysis of Speakings for large orchestra and electronics (2007-2008) by Jonathan Harvey, which can be considered as a relevant and illustrative example of instrumental and electronic elaboration of the phonetic dimension of language. Through this analysis he will demonstrate how compositional parameters, derived from phonetic criteria, are able to shape an instrumental piece. For this he will also create an original composition that involves the phonemic and the analytical transcription of the text in order to examine its acoustic characteristics and the realization of experiments in close collaboration with instrumentalists.
