Mantle of the Expert (MoE) is a dramatic-inquiry approach on teaching and learning in primary school: drama as a learning medium. It approaches the learning process of young children at an artistic-pedagogical level, aiming to explore the curriculum across different learning areas. Children are cast as a team of experts working for a (fictional) client and completing a commission. The ownership of the students, intrinsic motivation and a research-oriented attitude are stimulated and validated within this. A new research project at the School of Arts, Royal Conservatoire (AP University College Antwerp) investigates through field & experimental research if MoE indirectly develops artistic competences in drama. If so, that would give the methodology, invented by Dorothy Heathcote MBE (1926-2011), both a great artistic and social relevance.
