Music Practice is one of the common threads in the curriculum for all instrumental and vocal students, spanning the entire study programme from the first year of the bachelor’s degree to the final year of the master’s degree. The subject provides the student with thorough training in making music and singing together, in the broad sense of the word.

Ensemble

The subject Ensemble is an important part of your curriculum. You will have at least two hours per week of ensemble lessons, with students at master’s level (podium option) taking part in an extra ensemble. You can also play in a second ensemble by taking some of the optional courses.

Jazz

Students who enter the Jazz specialization at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp can expect to graduate as excellent musicians who are ready to take their place in the international professional scene. The training and coaching you will receive is highly practical and customized to your individual needs and interests. From day one, the study programme will immerse you in international professional practice, with an emphasis on the development of your own artistic personality, the acquisition of expertise, and the engagement of your sense of entrepreneurship.

Conducting

The Royal Conservatoire Antwerp offers tomorrow’s conductors a two-year specialization which further builds on the skills acquired during the Bachelor or Master of Music course. Conducting is a highly demanding discipline which requires very specific competencies: a thorough knowledge of the repertoire, knowledge of complex scores, an excellent ear, sophisticated communication skills, a perfect conducting technique and vital stage presence. The conducting course teaches you the rehearsal techniques, and the analytical and substantive artistic skills to create a considered interpretation and appropriate performance plan, and to put these into effect.

Vocal studies

Each year the Vocal trajectory (specialization Instrument / vocal studies) offered by the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp attracts a large number of students who come from across the whole world to use the teaching given by the Conservatoire’s solid team of internationally-renowned singing experts to advance their skills and to shape them into professional artists at the very highest level.

Brass Instruments

Brass forms an inherent part of our musical landscape, and it is difficult to imagine a symphony orchestra, brass band, or wind orchestra without a good brass section. Brass players are well-represented elsewhere, too, in a legion of other professional contexts: in brass ensembles, chamber music, musical theatre, and in the teaching of professionals and amateurs. The Bass trajectory of the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp (a trajectory of the specialization Instrument / vocal studies) is therefore focused on providing the student with broad skills, so that he or she can enter the professional world at a later stage in an independent and flexible manner, whether or not within the traditional orchestral framework.

Woodwind instruments

Woodwinds play an indispensable role in symphony orchestras, chamber music ensembles, and wind orchestras. The Woodwind trajectory at the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp (a trajectory of the specialization Instrument / vocal studies) is therefore heavily focused on traditional orchestral and ensemble training, led by an experienced staff of teachers who also occupy important solo positions in the national and international orchestral and chamber music world.

Percussion

Over the last 20 years, the professional percussion world has witnessed a spectacular (r)evolution. The repertoire and the new, contemporary techniques have been fundamentally changed, and professionals are now expected to be multifunctional; from playing in a baroque orchestra to a contemporary ensemble, from a session musician to improvising, from performing as a soloist to being a dedicated teacher. In response to this, the percussion tracetory of the specialization Instrument / vocal studies has developed into a highly-motivated department.

String instruments

Founded on a strong historical tradition within the Conservatoire, the String trajectory (of the specialization Instrument / vocal studies) provides an ambitious and inspiring environment for young, motivated violinists, violists, cellists, and double-bass players and also hosts the only Postgraduate Suzuki in Europe.

Plucked instruments

With its strong teaching tradition, the Plucked instruments trajectory (of the specialization Instrument / vocal studies) of the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp provides an inspiring learning environment for young guitarists and harpists, with technical mastery, individuality, and understanding of historical and contemporary performance practice at the core of the programme.
