Open Classrooms: DRAMA

ARTICULATE OPEN CLASSROOMS 

On 19 and 20 October, the artist-researchers of the Conservatoire present their research to the students, by elaborating on the scope of their project, by introducing their methods, research process, or (preliminary) conclusions, by performing an artistic result or by supervising a workshop.
Within three focused blocks, an interactive programme of open classrooms is developed for the students of dance, drama, and music.

The dutch novel ‘0xBlixa’ is the artistic outcome of the Phd-project ‘100 years of Surrealism’. MAYA D’HONDT will talk about ‘OxBlixa by Wendy’ and her process of transforming this book into a musical performance. Literary experts and teachers at the Academy / Conservatoire BOB VANDEN BROECK and JAN DERTAELEN, will endeavor to uncover the ways in which creative undertakings and collaborations have influenced Van Meenens prose during over the last four years.

What we commonly perceive as history is, in fact, a narrative crafted by individuals from both the past and the present. Is it possible for us to truly embody the past? In her research project 'Play(s) of Féminitude: The Role of Female Artists in Belgian Theatre History 1830-1948,' Edith Cassiers is developing strategies to re(dis)cover and (re)imagine womxn's history. This workshop delves into various feminist, queer, and decolonial performative strategies aimed at bringing history to life.

PRO//DRAMA is an integral component of the two-year postdoctoral research project titled 'Professionalizing the (Teaching) Artist Through Process Drama Performances.' Similar to traditional theater, the primary objective of process drama is to craft an imagined realm, a dramatic 'elsewhere,' collectively shaped by participants as they explore, express, and maintain fictional roles and scenarios. Improvised interactions remain at the core of the experience, serving as a wellspring of its dramatic potency.

This workshop builds upon the foundation of 'aesthetics of access' principles. Our creation originates from the interdisciplinary nature of performing arts, encompassing movement, text, and rhythm. We endeavor to forge a language that allows us to manifest our presence, even when we remain unseen. This language is one that is uniquely ours. Through instant composition, description, and reflection, our goal is not necessarily to be comprehended, but to be felt and perceived.
